Double-reed instruments such as the oboe, English horn, and bassoon were rarely found in musical salons. They generally remained within the orchestra, where they played a fundamental role and were sometimes entrusted with solo parts. However, by training musicians for such instruments since 1795, the Paris Conservatory encouraged Romantic composers to take an interest in their potential: competition pieces and chamber music thus highlighted the virtuosity acquired by the performers. Famous for her Concerto for oboe op. 7, Clémence de Grandval also wrote extensively for this family of wind instruments, particularly for the oboist Georges Gillet, who taught at the Conservatory from 1881 to 1919.
