La conferenza è dedicata a Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907), compositrice di grande talento. Allieva di Chopin, autrice di musiche di notevole originalità e qualità estetica, Grandval ebbe un ruolo di primo piano nella musica francese del suo tempo, soprattutto come membro della Société nationale de musique. Le sue opere e la sua biografia ci permettono di osservare il contesto e le pratiche musicali dell’epoca da un punto di vista insolito: ci mostrano quale spazio poteva conquistarsi una compositrice in questo ambiente, e a quale tipo di pubblico si rivolgesse la sua musica. Rivelatore il fatto che Grandval a volte distinguesse, già sul frontespizio, la musica riservata ai salotti e quella invece destinata alle sale da concerto, pubblicando per esempio un Trio de Salon e un Grand Trio.

The conference is dedicated to Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907), a composer of great talent. A student of Chopin, author of music of remarkable originality and aesthetic quality, Grandval played a prominent role in the French music of her time, especially as a member of the Société nationale de musique. Her works and biography allow us to observe the context and musical practices of the era from an unusual perspective: they show us what space a female composer could attain in this environment, and what kind of audience her music was aimed at. It is revealing that Grandval sometimes distinguished, already on the title page, music intended for salons and that meant for concert halls, publishing, for example, a Trio de Salon and a Grand Trio.
