PLAYERS.

PLAYERS. Video Games, Culture, Society
Curated by Fabio Viola

A token, an arcade cabinet, a joystick, a controller, a smartphone, a console connected to the world. The technology changes, but the desire stays the same: to explore virtual universes, live a thousand different lives, overcome obstacles, build worlds and keep playing.

M9 - Museo del '900 presents PLAYERS. Video Games, Culture, Society, an exhibition that spans a century of video game history and invites visitors to experience it first-hand.

The video game has become one of the most influential languages of our time: it brings together interactivity, narrative, art and technology, and has followed the evolution of Italian and European society. It tells the story of the country's social and cultural transformations, of youth cultures and new family rituals that have crossed generations, from the arcade to the teenager's bedroom to the family sofa.

The journey begins on the museum's two permanent exhibition floors, with a look at play before video games: the styles, tastes and customs of the twentieth century turned into toys that shaped shared imagery and social habits. From here the exhibition unfolds across three sections. #PLAY is a historical journey through the social spaces of play, from university laboratories in the 1950s to the contemporary living room. #WATCH explores the video game as spectacle: art, cinematic storytelling, esports, streaming. #CREATE tells the story of how video games are made, from legendary designers to generative artificial intelligence.

PLAYERS.
