Scrivendo per l’oboe, gli artisti romantici evocano un immaginario spesso in contrasto con il loro tempo: questo strumento rimanda infatti a un’estetica antica – quella dell’Ancien Régime, quando gli strumenti ad ancia doppia come questo svolgevano un ruolo importante nella musica all’aperto e nei balli – oppure a un’atmosfera campestre, come nel celebre assolo di corno inglese dell’ouverture del Guillaume Tell. Esplorando questi universi, compositori e compositrici non intendono però imitare il passato o il folclore popolare, bensì aprire nuove strade per rinnovare un’estetica europea ormai languente.

By writing for the oboe, Romantic artists evoke an imaginary often in contrast with their time: this instrument indeed evokes an ancient aesthetic – that of the Ancien Régime, when double-reed instruments like this played an important role in outdoor music and dances – or a pastoral atmosphere, as in the famous English horn solo of the Guillaume Tell overture. However, in exploring these universes, composers and composeresses do not intend to imitate the past or popular folklore, but rather to open new paths to renew a European aesthetic that has become languid.

Beim Schreiben für das Oboe rufen romantische Künstler eine Vorstellung hervor, die oft im Kontrast zu ihrer Zeit steht: dieses Instrument verweist nämlich auf eine antike Ästhetik – die des Ancien Régime, als Doppelrohrblattinstrumente wie dieses eine wichtige Rolle in der Musik im Freien und bei Tänzen spielten – oder auf eine ländliche Atmosphäre, wie im berühmten Englischhorn-Solo der Ouvertüre zu Guillaume Tell. Indem sie diese Universen erkunden, beabsichtigen Komponisten und Komponistinnen jedoch nicht, die Vergangenheit oder die Volkskultur nachzuahmen, sondern neue Wege zu eröffnen, um eine mittlerweile überholte europäische Ästhetik zu erneuern.
