Con oltre trenta nuovi dipinti realizzati all’interno di un’installazione immersiva, concepita appositamente per il museo, Hernan Bas (Miami, 1978) porta The Visitors a Ca’ Pesaro.
Traendo ispirazione da Venezia, città particolarmente sensibile al turismo, costantemente trasformata dalle sue conseguenze e in cui l’artista ha realizzato una residenza, Bas ha creato un nuovo corpus di opere incentrato su turisti collocati in scenari sia immaginati sia reali. Protagonisti che abitano un terreno mutevole fatto di attrazioni da “lista dei desideri”, siti storici, spazi sacri, locali equivoci e versioni sterilizzate del mondo naturale; mettendo in luce i cliché del turismo, come la Gioconda o la Fontana di Trevi, fino alle mete del cosiddetto dark tourism, come Chernobyl, Alcatraz e la foresta di Aokigahara, luoghi attraversati dal dolore che diventano tappe di itinerari; le trappole per turisti da cui si evidenzia, ancora di più, la fondamentale disconnessione tra i “visitatori” e i mondi che attraversano, luoghi progettati per ingannare, raggirare o deludere.
Bas è da tempo celebrato per le sue opere narrative permeate da umorismo, decadenza, stranezze, suggestioni occultiste e codici stratificati. Esplora le complessità dell’identità personale attraverso figure sospese in momenti di trasformazione, in cui l’ordinario scivola nello straordinario. In The Visitors, questa sensibilità si rivolge verso l’esterno. Come i dandies e i flâneurs delle opere precedenti di Bas, queste nuove figure si librano sulle soglie: tra curiosità e arroganza, incontro e violazione, esperienza e spettacolo.

With over 30 new artworks in an immersive installation conceived specifically for the Museum, Hernan Bas (Miami, 1978) will present The Visitors at Ca’ Pesaro.
Drawing inspiration from Venice, a city uniquely attuned to tourism and continually shaped by its consequences – and also the site of a recent residency undertaken by the artist – Bas has created a new body of work featuring tourists in scenarios both imagined and real. These protagonists – predominantly white, western and male – inhabit a shifting terrain of bucket-list attractions, historic sites, sacred spaces, seedy entertainment venues and sanitised examples of the natural world. With the fundamental disconnection between these ‘visitors’ and the worlds they traverse, Bas exposes the absurdity of iconic clichés of tourism such as the Mona Lisa or the Trevi Fountain; dark tourism destinations such as Chernobyl, Alcatraz and the Aokigahara Forest; and tourist traps designed to con, swindle or disappoint.
Bas has been long celebrated for narrative works permeated by humour, decadence, oddities, the occult and layered codes. He explores the intricacies of self-identity through figures poised at moments of transformation, where the ordinary slips into the extraordinary. In The Visitors, this sensibility turns outward. Like the dandies and flâneurs of Bas’s earlier works, these new figures hover at thresholds: between curiosity and arrogance, encounter and violation, experience and spectacle.

Inspiriert von Venedig, einer Stadt, die besonders sensibel für den Tourismus ist, ständig durch dessen Folgen verwandelt wird und in der der Künstler ein Wohnsitz errichtet hat, hat Bas ein neues Werkensemble geschaffen, das sich auf Touristen konzentriert, die in sowohl imagined als auch realen Szenarien platziert sind. Protagonisten, die ein sich veränderndes Terrain bewohnen, das aus "Must-See"-Attraktionen, historischen Stätten, heiligen Räumen, zweifelhaften Lokalen und sterilisierten Versionen der natürlichen Welt besteht; die Klischees des Tourismus beleuchtend, wie die Mona Lisa oder der Trevi-Brunnen, bis hin zu Zielen des sogenannten Dark Tourism, wie Tschernobyl, Alcatraz und dem Aokigahara-Wald, Orte, die von Schmerz durchzogen sind und zu Stationen von Routen werden; die Touristenfallen, aus denen die grundlegende Trennung zwischen den "Besuchern" und den Welten, die sie durchqueren, noch deutlicher hervorgeht, Orte, die darauf ausgelegt sind, zu täuschen, zu überlisten oder zu enttäuschen.
Bas wird seit langem für seine narrativen Werke gefeiert, die von Humor, Dekadenz, Absonderlichkeiten, okkulten Anspielungen und geschichteten Codes durchdrungen sind. Er erkundet die Komplexitäten der persönlichen Identität durch Figuren, die in Momenten der Transformation schwebend sind, in denen das Gewöhnliche ins Außergewöhnliche übergeht. In The Visitors richtet sich diese Sensibilität nach außen. Wie die Dandies und Flâneurs in Basses früheren Werken schweben diese neuen Figuren an den Schwellen: zwischen Neugier und Arroganz, Begegnung und Verletzung, Erfahrung und Spektakel.
