Così, se per la sorella il taglio di un bosco è un imperdonabile affronto e una stupida autocondanna per l'uomo, per lui è la normale conseguenza del progresso, il frutto dell'inarrestabile evoluzione che vede l'essere umano e le sue necessità al centro di tutto. Ritirato nella sua tana, tra i libri e le sculture che sono rimasti a fargli compagnia ora che la stanchezza lo ha allontanato dalle vette, il vecchio osserva questa nuova generazione un po' persa, con preoccupazione ma anche con la benevolenza di chi crede che, se le radici sono buone, non tutto è perduto.
