Descrizione
Il castello del Piagnaro domina in posizione strategica il centro storico di Pontremoli. Il suo nome deriva dalle presenza di cave di piagne, caratteristiche tegole ricavate da lastre di pietra arenaria utilizzate in Lunigiana per realizzare tetti e coperture.
Il Castello, sorto nell’alto Medioevo con funzioni di protezione e di controllo stradale, fu più volte trasformato nel corso dei secoli, e, durante il '900, adibito a residenza privata e sede scolastica, fino alla completa ristrutturazione a partire dagli anni 70.
Ancora oggi sono visibili l'imponente mastio medievale, il corpo di fabbrica centrale anticamente utilizzato come caserma e i possenti bastioni cinque secenteschi, dai quali è possibile ammirare uno splendido panorama sulla città. Il Castello ospita dal 1975 il Museo delle Statue Stele Lunigianesi “A.C. Ambrosi”.
The Piagnaro Castle strategically rules the historical centre of Pontremoli. The name Piagnaro comes from the presence of a quarry of piagne, particular tiles made from sandstone slabs used in Lunigiana to create roofs.
The castle was made in the early Middle Age to protect the village, and changed more times, during the centuries. In the twentieth century was a private residence and school, until the complete restoration starting from the Seventies. Even today, you can see the impressive medieval
keep, the central part once used as barracks and powerful bastions of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, from where you can see a wonderful view of the village.
Since 1975, the castle hosts the Museum of the Stele Statues, mysterious sculptures dating back to the Fourth and the First Millennium Before Christ, representing the most precious evidence of human presence in the Magra Valley.
