Descrizione

New meeting with the reading group "The Citadel of Readers". The book featured in the appointment is "The Assistant" by Bernard Malamud.

Morris Bober, a humble Jewish shopkeeper, leads a miserable life in the heart of Manhattan, worn down by the years. Frank Alpine, a petty thief of Italian descent, determined to redeem himself and become an honest man worthy of respect, helps Morris at the store. However, young Frank remains behind the counter because he is in love with the beautiful Helen, Morris's daughter.

Emotions, secrets, and the fate of these three lives intertwine in an almost hypnotic rhythm, giving the novel an unmistakable atmosphere, halfway between the tragic and the comic, which makes Malamud's narrative fascinating.
