Nel corso della sua straordinaria carriera, Tiziano realizzò alcuni dei dipinti più innovativi del suo tempo, affermandosi come il pittore italiano più celebre in Europa. Dal 1971, l’organizzazione non profit Save Venice promuove e sostiene il restauro di importanti capolavori dell’artista, tra cui San Marco in trono (Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute), l’Assunta e la Pala Pesaro (Basilica dei Frari), la Presentazione della Vergine al tempio (Gallerie dell’Accademia), l’Annunciazione della Scuola Grande di San Rocco e l’Annunciazione della Cappella Malchiostro nella Cattedrale di Treviso.
Il volume, finanziato da Save Venice con il sostegno di Christopher Todd Page, nasce dalle sorprendenti scoperte emerse durante queste campagne di restauro e offre una nuova prospettiva sul processo creativo e sulla tecnica pittorica di Tiziano. Arricchito da ingrandimenti inediti provenienti dall’archivio fotografico di Save Venice, il libro svela come mai prima d’ora il gesto del maestro, la fluidità delle sue pennellate e la sua straordinaria perizia tecnica. Questi momenti di puro virtuosismo pittorico sono accompagnati dalle riflessioni dei restauratori e da approfondite analisi storico-artistiche di autorevoli studiosi tizianeschi, rendendo questo libro una risorsa fondamentale sia per la comunità scientifica che per gli ammiratori della pittura del Rinascimento veneziano.
GABRIELE MATINO è Senior Researcher presso l’organizzazione no-profit americana Save Venice e curatore indipendente. Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Storia dell’arte presso la University of Nottingham, dove ha anche insegnato, oltre a tenere corsi alla University of York. Tra le borse di studio ricevute figurano la Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation Grant, la Save Venice Research Fellowship e il Paper Project Grant della Getty Foundation. Nel 2018 ha curato la mostra Arte, fede e medicina nella Venezia di Tintoretto presso la Scuola Grande di San Marco a Venezia, e nel 2021 ha co-curato Venetia 1600. Nascite e Rinascite al Palazzo Ducale. Tra il 2022 e il 2025 ha collaborato all’organizzazione della mostra Capolavori su carta alla Fondazione Miniscalchi-Erizzo di Verona. Matino ha pubblicato numerosi saggi in riviste specialistiche e contributi in volumi collettanei. Nel 2020 ha curato, insieme a Patricia Fortini Brown (Princeton University), il volume Carpaccio a Venezia. Itinerari e, nel 2024, ha pubblicato con Peter Humfrey (University of St Andrews) gli atti del convegno internazionale Vittore Carpaccio: contesto, iconografia, fortuna (2023). Ha collaborato con Davide Gasparotto (J. Paul Getty Museum) alla realizzazione del volume Tiziano & Save Venice. MELISSA CONN è la direttrice dell'ufficio di Venezia di Save Venice e lavora per l'organizzazione dal 1989. Con 36 anni di esperienza nel campo della storia dell'arte veneziana e del restauro, Melissa supervisiona tutti i progetti di conservazione dell'organizzazione a Venezia ed è responsabile del percorso di conservazione di Save Venice "Women Artists of Venice". Conn tiene regolarmente conferenze in Italia e negli Stati Uniti sui progetti di Save Venice. Residente a Venezia, è nata e cresciuta in Ohio e si è laureata in Storia dell'Arte alla Wake Forest University di Winston-Salem, nella Carolina del Nord.
Throughout his extraordinary career, Titian created some of the most innovative paintings of his time, establishing himself as the most renowned Italian painter in Europe. Since 1971, the nonprofit organization Save Venice has promoted and supported the restoration of significant masterpieces by the artist, including St. Mark Enthroned (Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute), The Assumption and the Pesaro Altarpiece (Basilica dei Frari), The Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple (Gallerie dell’Accademia), The Annunciation from the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, and The Annunciation from the Malchiostro Chapel in the Cathedral of Treviso.
The volume, funded by Save Venice with the support of Christopher Todd Page, arises from the remarkable discoveries made during these restoration campaigns and offers a new perspective on Titian's creative process and painting technique. Enhanced by previously unseen close-ups from the Save Venice photographic archive, the book reveals like never before the master's gesture, the fluidity of his brushstrokes, and his extraordinary technical skill. These moments of pure pictorial virtuosity are accompanied by the reflections of restorers and in-depth historical-artistic analyses from leading Titian scholars, making this book an essential resource for both the academic community and admirers of Venetian Renaissance painting.
GABRIELE MATINO is a Senior Researcher at the American nonprofit organization Save Venice and an independent curator. He earned his PhD in Art History from the University of Nottingham, where he also taught, in addition to holding courses at the University of York. Among the fellowships he has received are the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation Grant, the Save Venice Research Fellowship, and the Getty Foundation's Paper Project Grant. In 2018, he curated the exhibition Art, Faith, and Medicine in Tintoretto's Venice at the Scuola Grande di San Marco in Venice, and in 2021 co-curated Venetia 1600. Births and Rebirths at the Doge's Palace. Between 2022 and 2025, he has collaborated on the organization of the exhibition Masterpieces on Paper at the Miniscalchi-Erizzo Foundation in Verona. Matino has published numerous essays in specialized journals and contributions in collective volumes. In 2020, he co-edited, with Patricia Fortini Brown (Princeton University), the volume Carpaccio in Venice. Itineraries and, in 2024, published with Peter Humfrey (University of St Andrews) the proceedings of the international conference Vittore Carpaccio: context, iconography, fortune (2023). He collaborated with Davide Gasparotto (J. Paul Getty Museum) on the volume Titian & Save Venice. Six Restored Masterpieces, on the major restorations promoted by Save Venice dedicated to the work of Titian.
MELISSA CONN is the director of Save Venice's office in Venice and has been working for the organization since 1989. With 36 years of experience in Venetian art history and restoration, Melissa supervises all of the organization’s conservation projects in Venice and is responsible for Save Venice's conservation initiative "Women Artists of Venice." Conn regularly gives talks in Italy and the United States about Save Venice's projects. A resident of Venice, she was born and raised in Ohio and holds a degree in Art History from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
