Bruegel. Un pittore europeo ai tempi di Tiziano

Nella conferenza, Bernard Aikema esporrà una prima presentazione della mostra sulla famiglia artistica dei Bruegel, che avrà luogo nell’autunno del 2026 a Milano, Palazzo Reale, per poi passare, nel 2027, a Madrid, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Il nome dei Bruegel evoca scene di contadini, episodi di vita di tutti i giorni, ma anche visioni fantastiche: temi fortemente innovativi per l’epoca, fra la seconda metà del XVI secolo e i primi decenni del secolo successivo.
I tre principali membri della famiglia, Pieter il Vecchio, e i suoi figli Jan e Pieter il Giovane, crearono un vero e proprio “brand” pittorico, che verranno illustrati nella conferenza, trasformando la produzione artistica fra Anversa, Praga, i Paesi Bassi, con degli effetti anche nel mondo mediterraneo.
È questo il periodo che vede le origini di quelli che vengono chiamati i generi pittorici, fra la natura morta, il paesaggio, la battaglia, le scene di vita quotidiana, ecc.
I Bruegel, in questo processo, hanno avuto un ruolo essenziale, come verranno approfonditi nella conferenza con molti esempi spettacolari, e, naturalmente, nella mostra.
BERNARD AIKEMA.
Laureato ad Amsterdam, professore all’Università di Nimega (Olanda) e Lovanio (Belgio), è stato guest professor a Princeton e ad Harvard, ha tenuto conferenze sull’arte veneta in molti paesi europei e nel nord America, è autore di oltre 100 pubblicazioni in inglese e italiano sulla pittura e il disegno veneziani.
I metodi di ricerca spaziano dalla filologia all’iconologia, alla storia sociale dell’arte.
È stato ideatore e co-curatore di mostre che si sono tenute alla Fondazione Cini, ad Amsterdam e a New York.
Nel ’99 a Venezia a Palazzo Grassi ha curato “Il Rinascimento a Venezia e la pittura del Nord”; ha avviato l’attività della Fondazione Tiziano e Cadore impostando i metodi di ricerca del Centro Studi, del quale è stato presidente del Consiglio scientifico dal 2003 al 2020; a Roma nel 2010, alla Galleria Borghese la mostra “Lucas Cranach. L’altro Rinascimento”; a Verona al Palazzo della Gran Guardia “Paolo Veronese, l’illusione della realtà” (2014).
Nel 2017 ha curato la mostra per Palazzo Ducale “Jheronimus Bosch e Venezia” ed è stato supervisore dell’esposizione “Tiziano, Tintoretto, Veronese”, allestita al Museo Puskin di Mosca.
Nel 2018 ha curato a Palazzo Reale di Milano “Albrecht Dürer e il Rinascimento tra Germania e Italia” e nel 2022, sempre a Palazzo Reale di Milano, “Bosch e un altro Rinascimento” e nel 2024 presso il Castello del Buonconsiglio di Trento, "Dürer e gli altri. I Rinascimenti alla riva dell’Adige".

At the conference, Bernard Aikema will present a first overview of the exhibition on the artistic family of the Bruegels, which will take place in the autumn of 2026 in Milan, Palazzo Reale, and then move to Madrid, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, in 2027.
The name Bruegel evokes scenes of peasants, episodes of everyday life, but also fantastic visions: themes that were strongly innovative for the time, between the second half of the 16th century and the early decades of the following century.
The three main members of the family, Pieter the Elder, and his sons Jan and Pieter the Younger, created a true pictorial “brand,” which will be illustrated in the conference, transforming artistic production between Antwerp, Prague, the Netherlands, with effects also felt in the Mediterranean world.
This is the period that sees the origins of what are called the pictorial genres, including still life, landscape, battle, scenes of daily life, etc.
The Bruegels played an essential role in this process, as will be explored in the conference with many spectacular examples and, of course, in the exhibition.
BERNARD AIKEMA.
A graduate of Amsterdam, professor at the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands) and Leuven (Belgium), he has been a guest professor at Princeton and Harvard, has given lectures on Venetian art in many European countries and in North America, and is the author of over 100 publications in English and Italian on Venetian painting and drawing.
His research methods range from philology to iconology to the social history of art.
He was the creator and co-curator of exhibitions held at the Cini Foundation, in Amsterdam, and in New York.
In ’99 in Venice at Palazzo Grassi he curated “The Renaissance in Venice and Northern Painting”; he initiated the activities of the Tiziano and Cadore Foundation establishing the research methods of the Study Center, of which he was the president of the Scientific Council from 2003 to 2020; in Rome in 2010, at the Galleria Borghese the exhibition “Lucas Cranach. The Other Renaissance”; in Verona at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia “Paolo Veronese, the Illusion of Reality” (2014).
In 2017 he curated the exhibition for Palazzo Ducale “Jheronimus Bosch and Venice” and was the supervisor of the exhibition “Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese,” set up at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
In 2018 he curated at Palazzo Reale in Milan “Albrecht Dürer and the Renaissance between Germany and Italy” and in 2022, also at Palazzo Reale in Milan, “Bosch and Another Renaissance” and in 2024 at the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento, "Dürer and the Others. The Renaissances on the banks of the Adige."

Auf der Konferenz wird Bernard Aikema eine erste Präsentation der Ausstellung über die künstlerische Familie der Bruegel halten, die im Herbst 2026 im Palazzo Reale in Mailand stattfinden wird, bevor sie 2027 im Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid gezeigt wird.
Der Name der Bruegel ruft Szenen von Landwirten, Episoden des Alltagslebens, aber auch fantastische Visionen hervor: Themen, die für die damalige Zeit zwischen der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts und den ersten Jahrzehnten des folgenden Jahrhunderts stark innovativ waren.
Die drei Hauptmitglieder der Familie, Pieter der Alte und seine Söhne Jan und Pieter der Jüngere, schufen eine wahre künstlerische “Marke”, die in der Konferenz erläutert wird und die künstlerische Produktion zwischen Antwerpen, Prag und den Niederlanden sowie deren Auswirkungen auf die Mittelmeerwelt transformierte.
Dies ist die Zeit, die die Ursprünge dessen sieht, was als die Malgenres bezeichnet wird, zwischen Stillleben, Landschaften, Schlachten, Alltagsszenen usw.
Die Bruegel spielten in diesem Prozess eine wesentliche Rolle, die in der Konferenz mit vielen spektakulären Beispielen vertieft wird und natürlich auch in der Ausstellung.

Er hat in Amsterdam studiert, ist Professor an der Universität Nijmegen (Niederlande) und Löwen (Belgien), war Gastprofessor an der Princeton und an der Harvard Universität, hielt Vorlesungen zur venetianischen Kunst in vielen europäischen Ländern und Nordamerika und ist Autor von über 100 Veröffentlichungen in Englisch und Italienisch über venezianische Malerei und Zeichnung.
Die Forschungsmethoden reichen von der Philologie über die Ikonologie bis hin zur Sozialgeschichte der Kunst.
Er war Initiator und Co-Kurator von Ausstellungen, die in der Cini-Stiftung, in Amsterdam und in New York stattfanden.
Im Jahr 1999 kuratierte er in Venedig im Palazzo Grassi die Ausstellung “Die Renaissance in Venedig und die Malerei des Nordens”; gründete die Aktivitäten der Tizian und Cadore Stiftung und legte die Forschungsmethoden des Forschungszentrums fest, dessen wissenschaftlicher Rat er von 2003 bis 2020 präsidierte; 2010 in Rom, in der Galleria Borghese die Ausstellung “Lucas Cranach. Die andere Renaissance”; in Verona im Palazzo della Gran Guardia “Paolo Veronese, die Illusion der Realität” (2014).
2017 kuratierte er die Ausstellung im Palazzo Ducale “Jheronimus Bosch und Venedig” und war Supervisor der Ausstellung “Tizian, Tintoretto, Veronese”, die im Puschkin-Museum in Moskau gezeigt wurde.
2018 kuratierte er im Palazzo Reale in Mailand “Albrecht Dürer und die Renaissance zwischen Deutschland und Italien” und 2022 ebenfalls im Palazzo Reale in Mailand “Bosch und eine andere Renaissance” und 2024 im Castel del Buonconsiglio in Trient, "Dürer und die anderen. Die Renaissance am Ufer der Etsch".
