Book presentation "The Enemy in the Great War. The Propaganda Image in Trench Newspapers" by Marta Covre.

The First World War provides the backdrop for the development of propaganda as a tool for mobilization against a common enemy: the “German.” An enemy that is anything but instinctive, but extremely useful for channeling the hatred stemming from years of trench warfare. After Caporetto, the Service P sets in motion a deployment of men and resources never seen before to shape the collective imagination against it. One of the most evident and prolific manifestations of this commitment is the widespread distribution of trench newspapers, written by soldiers for soldiers, at least in theory. This research analyzes 14 Italian trench newspapers published between 1918 and the early months of 1919, with the aim of outlining the image of the enemy conveyed by drawings and articles. The sample is both limited and diverse, geographically and politically. Efforts were made to include all the macro-areas of the Italian front and the main foreign fronts, the mimeographed publications by willing soldiers and the almost glossy magazines printed in Milan, the sheets full of amateur and caricatural sketches, and the weekly publications solely containing articles for officers. “What is propaganda if not the effort to modify the image to which individuals react?”

The event is part of the series Veneto Legge.
