LA TRAMA
Patricia Kingori è la più giovane professoressa nera nei 925 anni di storia dell’università di Oxford. Incuriosita dall’industria segreta e multimiliardaria dei saggi accademici falsi, entra nel mondo degli “studiosi ombra”: si stima siano almeno 40.000 i keniani altamente istruiti e sottoccupati che sbarcano il lunario producendo saggi e articoli per studenti di tutto il mondo. Tra loro c’è Mercy, una madre single, che si fa in quattro per mantenere la figlia scrivendo migliaia di parole ogni notte, aiutando gli studenti dei paesi ricchi a laurearsi e trovare un lavoro redditizio. Intanto, negli Stati Uniti, una studentessa disperata vende sue foto online per potersi permettere di pagare un testo e ottenere un voto positivo agli esami. Insieme alla domanda crescono però anche le tensioni, con minacce di controlli e punizioni nel Regno Unito e in Australia, e l’ascesa della concorrenza dell’intelligenza artificiale. In questo scenario, mentre l’élite mondiale può pagare per lauree che non ha conseguito, e i keniani istruiti non trovano lavoro al di fuori di questa industria clandestina, Patricia si chiede quale sia il vero valore dell’istruzione.
LA REGISTA
Eloise King è una regista queer di origine caraibica, nata a Londra, che adotta un approccio interdisciplinare per raccontare storie complesse che portano in primo piano prospettive marginalizzate dalla cultura dominante e popolare. Il suo lavoro esamina fenomeni istituzionali e culturali per evidenziare le contraddizioni sociali e le conseguenti tensioni del cosiddetto “progresso”. In qualità di ex-produttrice esecutiva globale di VICE, ha guidato un team che ha realizzato diversi documentari internazionali pluripremiati, in Nord e Sud America, Europa e Asia. King ha ricevuto la Logan Nonfiction Fellowship, la Director Fellowship inaugurale di Netflix, la Firelight Media Fellowship e il TV and Film Charity John Brabourne Award. THE PLOT
Patricia Kingori is the youngest black professor in the 925-year history of the University of Oxford. Intrigued by the secret, multi-billion dollar industry of fake academic essays, she enters the world of "shadow scholars": it is estimated that there are at least 40,000 highly educated and underemployed Kenyans making ends meet by producing essays and articles for students around the world. Among them is Mercy, a single mother, who works tirelessly to support her daughter by writing thousands of words every night, helping students from wealthy countries graduate and find profitable jobs. Meanwhile, in the United States, a desperate student sells her photos online to afford a textbook and achieve a passing grade in exams. However, along with the demand, tensions are also rising, with threats of scrutiny and penalties in the UK and Australia, and the rise of competition from artificial intelligence. In this scenario, as the global elite can pay for degrees they have not earned, and educated Kenyans struggle to find work outside this underground industry, Patricia questions what the true value of education is.
THE DIRECTOR
Eloise King is a queer director of Caribbean descent, born in London, who adopts an interdisciplinary approach to tell complex stories that bring marginalized perspectives to the forefront of dominant and popular culture. Her work examines institutional and cultural phenomena to highlight social contradictions and the resulting tensions of so-called “progress.” As a former global executive producer for VICE, she led a team that produced several internationally acclaimed documentaries across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. King has received the Logan Nonfiction Fellowship, Netflix's inaugural Director Fellowship, the Firelight Media Fellowship, and the TV and Film Charity John Brabourne Award. The project of Youts, her debut narrative feature as writer and director, was selected for the prestigious industry program at the BFI London Film Festival. The Shadow Scholars is her first documentary as a director.

Patricia Kingori ist die jüngste schwarze Professorin in der 925-jährigen Geschichte der Universität Oxford. In diesem Szenario fragt sich Patricia, während die weltweite Elite für Abschlüsse bezahlen kann, die sie nicht erworben hat, und die gebildeten Kenianer außerhalb dieser Untergrundindustrie keine Arbeit finden, was der wahre Wert der Bildung ist.
