«Rosso» per il colore dei capelli, «volante» perché nessuno come lui sa sfrecciare sulla neve: è Gianni Brera ad attribuire questo soprannome a Eugenio Monti, nato a Dobbiaco nel 1928 e cresciuto nella bellezza delle Dolomiti e nell’atmosfera ottimista e affaccendata del boom.
Eugenio va veloce: in moto, in auto, con gli amici, con le ragazze. E sugli sci, il suo primo amore: a ventidue anni riesce a battere il grande campione Zeno Colò. Niente sembra poterlo fermare, fino a che il sogno di una carriera da sciatore viene spezzato da due gravi infortuni ai legamenti. Rassegnarsi? No: continuare a correre. Nasce Rosso Volante, la leggenda del bob.
Che all’epoca è uno sport duro, da pionieri: sono in molti a infortunarsi prima del traguardo, e sulle piste si muore. Eugenio invece arriva, e arriva primo, conquistando per l’Italia un medagliere d’eccezione. Ma a fare di lui una leggenda sono anche il suo carisma e il suo fair play: alle Olimpiadi di Innsbruck 1964, con un gesto semplice quanto incredibile, regalando un bullone del suo bob agli avversari inglesi, regalerà loro anche la medaglia d’oro.
È il profilo di un atleta istintivo e generoso, ma anche tormentato. Vittorie, sconfitte, esaltazioni e delusioni, fino all’ultima tragica notte con il freddo fuori e la disperazione nel cuore. Il romanzo di un’Italia che sapeva cadere e rialzarsi, correre e sognare.

“Red” for the color of his hair, “flying” because no one can speed on snow like him: it was Gianni Brera who gave this nickname to Eugenio Monti, born in Dobbiaco in 1928 and raised in the beauty of the Dolomites and the optimistic, bustling atmosphere of the boom.
Eugenio is fast: on a motorcycle, in a car, with friends, with girls. And on skis, his first love: at twenty-two, he manages to beat the great champion Zeno Colò. Nothing seems to stop him, until his dream of a skiing career is shattered by two serious ligament injuries. Give up? No: keep racing. Red Flying is born, the legend of bobsledding.
At the time, it is a tough sport, for pioneers: many get injured before the finish line, and there are fatalities on the slopes. Eugenio, however, makes it, and he comes in first, earning an exceptional medal count for Italy. But it’s also his charisma and fair play that make him a legend: at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics, with a gesture as simple as it is incredible, by gifting a bolt from his bob to his English opponents, he also gifts them the gold medal.
He profiles an instinctive and generous athlete, but also a tormented one. Victories, defeats, elations, and disappointments, until the last tragic night with the cold outside and despair in his heart. The tale of Italy that knew how to fall and rise again, run and dream.

«Rot» wegen der Haarfarbe, «fliegender», denn niemand kann so wie er über den Schnee sausen: es ist Gianni Brera, der diesem Spitznamen Eugenio Monti verleiht, geboren 1928 in Toblach und aufgewachsen in der Schönheit der Dolomiten und im optimistischen, geschäftigen Klima des Booms.
Eugenio ist schnell: auf dem Motorrad, im Auto, mit Freunden, mit Mädchen. Und auf Skiern, seiner ersten Liebe: mit zweiundzwanzig gelingt es ihm, den großen Champion Zeno Colò zu schlagen. Nichts scheint ihn aufhalten zu können, bis der Traum einer Karriere als Skiläufer durch zwei schwere Verletzungen an den Bändern zerbrochen wird. Sich der Resignation hingeben? Nein: weiterlaufen. Rosso Volante wird geboren, die Legende des Bobs.
Das zu der Zeit ein harter Sport, Pionierarbeit: viele verletzen sich vor dem Ziel, und auf den Pisten gibt es Tote. Eugenio hingegen kommt an und kommt als Erster an und erwirbt für Italien eine außergewöhnliche Medaillensammlung. Doch sein Charisma und sein Fair Play machen ihn ebenfalls zur Legende: Bei den Olympischen Spielen in Innsbruck 1964, mit einer so einfachen wie unglaublichen Geste, indem er einen Bolzen seines Bobs den englischen Gegnern schenkt, schenkt er ihnen auch die Goldmedaille.
Es ist das Profil eines instinctiven und großzügigen Athleten, aber auch eines gequälten. Siege, Niederlagen, Begeisterungen und Enttäuschungen, bis zur letzten tragischen Nacht mit der Kälte draußen und der Verzweiflung im Herzen. Der Roman über ein Italien, das wusste, zu fallen und wieder aufzustehen, zu rennen und zu träumen.
