La mostra è incentrata sugli artisti italiani e stranieri che hanno vissuto nella New York negl’anni Ottanta tra mondanità, trasgressione ed eccesso. È in questo periodo che le opere d’arte escono dalle gallerie per approdare in luoghi meno convenzionali, come ad esempio le metropolitane, dove street artists vengono eletti a ruolo di veri e propri artisti, come Keith Haring.
Tra i protagonisti in mostra: Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Nicola De Maria, Keith Haring, Carlo Maria Mariani, Luigi Ontani, Mimmo Paladino, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Toxic e Andy Warhol.
L’East Village newyorkese è il loro luogo di elezione con i suoi night club, frequentati anche da cantanti dove si passano serate al limite tra l’immaginario underground e la trasgressione, tra cui The Dome, il Palladium e lo Studio 54, che per Basquiat diventa una vera e propria casa e negli anni si trasforma in una galleria d’arte. Da zona malfamata l’East Village si riqualifica in quartiere di artisti, poeti e scrittori che si ritrovano a fraternizzare nei ristoranti, nelle gallerie e nelle vie dove spesso vengono organizzati talk show improvvisati.
Nel 1982 l’East Village è ufficialmente il quartiere della nuova creatività.
Con questa esposizione Farsettiarte si propone di esplorare l’arte a cavallo degli anni Ottanta in cui essere artista in Italia poteva significare pranzare a Napoli con Warhol, conversare con Basquiat a Modena e trasferirsi con estrema semplicità da una città di provincia alla cosmopolita New York, per diventare protagonisti della scena artistica internazionale.
The exhibition focuses on Italian and foreign artists who lived in New York in the 1980s amid socialite culture, transgression, and excess. It is during this period that artworks emerge from galleries to land in less conventional places, such as subways, where street artists are embraced as true artists, like Keith Haring.
Among the featured artists: Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Nicola De Maria, Keith Haring, Carlo Maria Mariani, Luigi Ontani, Mimmo Paladino, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Toxic, and Andy Warhol.
The New York East Village is their chosen place with its nightclubs, frequented also by singers, where evenings are spent straddling the line between the underground imagination and transgression, including The Dome, the Palladium and Studio 54, which for Basquiat becomes a true home and over time transforms into an art gallery. Once a notorious area, the East Village requalifies itself as a neighborhood of artists, poets, and writers who gather in restaurants, galleries, and streets where improvised talk shows are often organized.
In 1982 the East Village is officially the neighborhood of new creativity.
With this exhibition, Farsettiarte aims to explore art at the crossover of the 1980s, where being an artist in Italy could mean having lunch in Naples with Warhol, chatting with Basquiat in Modena, and moving effortlessly from a provincial city to cosmopolitan New York to become leading figures in the international art scene.
