"Nel blu - avere tra le braccia tanta felicità" è una produzione Permar, Emilia Romagna Teatro ERT / Teatro Nazionale con il contributo di Regione Emilia Romagna, Comune di Medicina.
C’è stato un momento in cui il nostro paese – e una gran parte di mondo – è apparso felice.
Sono gli anni a cavallo del 1958, gli anni subito prima e subito dopo l’inizio del boom economico. La gente era – o sembrava – felice, carica di futuro negli occhi.
E se c’è un uomo che incarna tutto questo nel suo corpo, se c’è uno che con la sua voce, con la spinta vitale che ha abitato ogni suo passo, rappresenta appieno quegli anni, quest’uomo è Domenico Modugno.
Con una sola canzone rende l’intero occidente felice di esistere. Eppure lui sapeva di lavorare sull’effimero, sull’impalpabile ma, nonostante tutto, si ostinava a crederci: «Io voglio cantare la felicità. Anche se non esiste, mi voglio illudere che esista, devo credere che esista». E lo fa con ostinazione, con tormento interiore, ma fino in fondo.
Nel blu è il racconto intimo di un uomo di una terra dimenticata da Dio – quella Puglia che sarebbe rimasta alla periferia del regno ancora per decenni, almeno fino a quando anche io la lasciai per cercare una vita artistica altrove – che parte all’avventura per “fare l’attore” e si ritrova, dopo pochi anni, a insegnare a tutto il mondo a “volare”: apre la bocca e trascina via con un urlo irrefrenabile ogni residuo fosco del dopoguerra.
Proverò ad accostare la sua storia con tutta la cura possibile, per non tradire un uomo della mia terra, per non tradire la mia terra stessa.
Un racconto di un’esistenza guascona e testarda in cui i musicisti/compositori con me sul palco sono l’altra voce di Domenico Modugno, quella voce che le parole non riescono e non possono rappresentare.

There was a moment when our country – and a large part of the world – seemed happy.
It is the years around 1958, the years just before and just after the onset of the economic boom. People were – or seemed – happy, filled with a future in their eyes.
And if there is a man who embodies all of this in his body, if there is one who with his voice, with the vital push that inhabited every step of his, fully represents those years, that man is Domenico Modugno.
With a single song, he makes the entire West happy to exist. Yet he knew he was working on the ephemeral, the insubstantial, but despite everything, he persisted in believing: "I want to sing happiness. Even if it doesn't exist, I want to delude myself that it exists, I have to believe that it exists." And he does it with stubbornness, with inner turmoil, but all the way.
In the blue is the intimate tale of a man from a land forgotten by God – that Puglia which would remain on the periphery of the kingdom for decades, at least until I also left it to seek an artistic life elsewhere – who sets off on an adventure to "become an actor" and finds himself, after a few years, teaching the whole world to "fly": he opens his mouth and drags away with an uncontrollable scream every dark remnant of the post-war period.
I will try to approach his story with all possible care, so as not to betray a man from my land, so as not to betray my land itself.
A tale of a reckless and stubborn existence in which the musicians/composers with me on stage are the other voice of Domenico Modugno, that voice which words cannot and do not represent.

Es gab einen Moment, in dem unser Land – und ein großer Teil der Welt – glücklich erschien.
Es sind die Jahre um 1958, die Jahre direkt vor und nach dem Beginn des Wirtschaftsbooms. Die Leute waren – oder schienen – glücklich, mit einer Zukunft im Blick.
Und wenn es einen Mann gibt, der all dies in seinem Körper verkörpert, wenn es einen gibt, der mit seiner Stimme, mit dem Lebensdrang, der jeden seiner Schritte durchzieht, diese Jahre voll und ganz repräsentiert, dann ist dieser Mann Domenico Modugno.
Mit einem einzigen Lied macht er den gesamten Westen glücklich, zu existieren. Und doch wusste er, dass er am Vergänglichen, am Unfassbaren arbeitete, aber trotzdem beharrte er darauf, daran zu glauben: „Ich möchte das Glück besingen. Auch wenn es nicht existiert, möchte ich mich illusorisch fühlen, dass es existiert, ich muss glauben, dass es existiert.“ Und er tut dies mit Beharrlichkeit, mit innerem Schmerz, aber bis zum Ende.
Im Blau erzählt die intime Geschichte eines Mannes aus einem von Gott vergessenen Land – jenem Apulien, das Jahrzehnte lang am Rande des Königreichs verbleiben sollte, mindestens bis ich es verließ, um woanders ein künstlerisches Leben zu suchen – der sich auf das Abenteuer begibt, „Schauspieler“ zu werden, und sich nach wenigen Jahren wiederfindet, der ganzen Welt das „Fliegen“ beizubringen: Er öffnet den Mund und reißt mit einem unaufhaltsamen Schrei jeden dunklen Rest der Nachkriegszeit mit sich.
Ich werde versuchen, seine Geschichte mit aller möglichen Sorgfalt zu erzählen, um einen Mann aus meiner Heimat nicht zu verraten, um meine Heimat selbst nicht zu verraten.
Eine Erzählung von einer ungestümen und sturen Existenz, in der die Musiker/Komponisten mit mir auf der Bühne die andere Stimme von Domenico Modugno sind, jene Stimme, die die Worte nicht darstellen können und nicht darstellen wollen.
