Verso la fine degli anni settanta un folto gruppo di velisti, con barca nel porto di Cisano diede inizio ad una serie di sfide informali per determinare, in modo simpatico ed amatoriale, una specie di graduatoria in merito alle loro capacità di regatanti.
Molto opportunamente stabilirono che il periodo migliore per disputare queste sfide fossero i mesi invernali. In questa fase dell'anno, infatti, il basso lago offre ad un velista il meglio di sé: clima incredibilmente mite, aria in discreta abbondanza e, soprattutto, totale assenza di navigazione a motore.
L'idea ebbe subito successo e le adesioni a questo particolare modo di regatare si fecero subito numerose. I promotori si trovarono quindi nella necessità di creare un primo regolamento e grazie al lavoro appassionato di molti amanti della vela si giunse ad organizzare vere e proprie regate.
Il successo di questa formula fu tale che chiesero di essere ammessi anche i velisti di Bardolino e di Garda. Pertanto il Comitato di Zona della Federazione Italiana Vela inviò degli osservatori a studiare il fenomeno. Con il passare del tempo l'organizzazione divenne sempre più gravosa e così gli organizzatori decisero di rivolgersi al Centro Nautico Bardolino per avere il supporto tecnico necessario e la ormai necessaria "ufficialità".
Si giunse così all'organizzazione dell'attuale Campionato Invernale del Garda: una manifestazione velica invernale a tappe sul Lago di Garda organizzata dal Centro Nautico Bardolino.
Towards the end of the 1970s, a large group of sailors with boats in the port of Cisano began a series of informal challenges to determine, in a friendly and amateurish way, a sort of ranking of their racing abilities. Very appropriately they decided that the best time to hold these challenges was during the winter months. This is the time of year when the lower lake offers a sailor the best of both worlds: an incredibly mild climate, plenty of air and, above all, no motorised sailing. The idea was immediately successful and the number of people who signed up for this particular type of racing was immediately high.
The promoters then found themselves in the need to create an initial set of rules and, thanks to the passionate work of many sailing enthusiasts, they were able to organise proper regattas. The success of this formula was such that sailors from Bardolino and Garda asked to be admitted. Therefore, the Zone Committee of the Italian Sailing Federation sent observers to study the phenomenon.
As time went by, the organisation became more and more burdensome and so the organisers decided to turn to the Centro Nautico Bardolino for the necessary technical support and the necessary "official status". This led to the organisation of the current Garda Winter Championship: a winter sailing event in stages on Lake Garda organised by the Centro Nautico Bardolino.
Gegen Ende der 1970er Jahre begann eine große Gruppe von Seglern mit Booten im Hafen von Cisano mit einer Reihe von informellen Wettkämpfen, um auf freundschaftliche und laienhafte Weise eine Art Rangliste ihrer Wettkampffähigkeiten zu erstellen. Passenderweise haben sie beschlossen, dass die beste Zeit für die Durchführung dieser Wettbewerbe die Wintermonate sind. Zu dieser Jahreszeit bietet der untere See dem Segler das Beste aus beiden Welten: ein unglaublich mildes Klima, viel Luft und vor allem kein motorisiertes Segeln.
Die Idee war sofort erfolgreich und die Zahl derer, die sich für diese besondere Art von Rennen anmeldeten, war sofort hoch. Die Organisatoren sahen sich daraufhin gezwungen, ein erstes Regelwerk zu erstellen, und dank der leidenschaftlichen Arbeit vieler Segelfreunde konnten sie richtige Regatten organisieren. Der Erfolg dieses Konzepts war so groß, dass Matrosen aus Bardolino und Garda um die Aufnahme baten. Deshalb hat das Zonenkomitee des italienischen Segelverbandes Beobachter entsandt, um das Phänomen zu untersuchen.
Im Laufe der Zeit wurde die Organisation immer aufwändiger, so dass die Organisatoren beschlossen, sich an das Centro Nautico Bardolino zu wenden, um die notwendige technische Unterstützung und den erforderlichen "offiziellen Status" zu erhalten. Dies führte zur Organisation der aktuellen Garda Winter Championship: eine Wintersegelveranstaltung in Etappen auf dem Gardasee, die vom Centro Nautico Bardolino organisiert wird.
