Agnès, una giovane e brillante docente universitaria, vive in una cittadina tranquilla del New England. Quando succede "la cosa brutta", il suo mondo va in pezzi, ma tutto accade improvvisamente e senza clamore, quasi in punta di piedi. Questo evento traumatico l’ha lasciata sospesa, come congelata nel tempo, mentre intorno a lei il mondo continua a scorrere e trasformarsi. Le persone che la circondano continuano a vivere normalmente. Tra queste c’è Lydie, la sua migliore amica che si trasferisce a New York, mette su famiglia e inizia una nuova vita, mentre Agnès resta ancorata a un presente che pesa e a un passato ingombrante.
Poi c’è Decker, il professore stimato ma simbolo di un potere corrotto e di dinamiche opprimenti; ma anche Gavin, il vicino di casa gentile, taciturno ma rassicurante.
