Tornato a Venezia da Napoli, Lelio Bisognosi vuol darsi alla bella vita e s’invaghisce di Rosaura, figlia del dottor Balanzoni. Ignorando i consigli del servo Arlecchino, corteggia la giovane producendosi in una serie di bugie, delle quali rimangono vittime i suoi conoscenti e, inizialmente, anche l’anziano Pantalone, suo padre, che lo ha rivisto dopo vent’anni. Alla fine, però, il bugiardo rimarrà vittima dei suoi stessi inganni.

Back in Venice from Naples, Lelio Bisognosi wants to indulge in the good life and becomes infatuated with Rosaura, the daughter of Dr. Balanzoni. Ignoring the advice of his servant Arlecchino, he woos the young woman by weaving a series of lies, which ensnare his acquaintances and, initially, even the elderly Pantalone, his father, who he has not seen in twenty years. In the end, however, the liar will fall victim to his own deceptions.

Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Venedig aus Neapel möchte Lelio Bisognosi das schöne Leben genießen und verliebt sich in Rosaura, die Tochter des Doktors Balanzoni. Die Ratschläge seines Dieners Arlecchino ignorierend, umworben er die junge Frau und zieht eine Reihe von Lügen auf, von denen seine Bekannten, und anfangs auch der alte Pantalone, sein Vater, der ihn nach zwanzig Jahren wieder sieht, betroffen sind. Am Ende wird der Lügner jedoch Opfer seiner eigenen Betrügereien.
