In un bosco, una giovane donna dorme rannicchiata nella culla formata dalla radice emersa di un albero secolare: è vestita di rosso cupo, accompagnata da un falco che risponde ai suoi richiami, conosce erbe e pozioni, si dice non sia nata da sua madre ma da una donna venuta da lontano. Si chiama Agnes e quando Will la vede se ne innamora subito. Will è il giovane William Shakespeare, che riesce a sposarla nonostante l’ostilità delle famiglie e ad avere con lei tre figli, Susannah e i gemelli Judith e Hamnet. Ma un lutto li colpisce, quando il drammaturgo lavora già a Londra, e Hamnet diventa Hamlet. Tratta dal romanzo del 2020 di Maggie O’Farrell, la storia di Agnes (più che di William), intessuta di magia e femminilità.
Come si fa a dire qualcosa di nuovo, cinematograficamente parlando, su William Shakespeare e il suo Amleto? Chloé Zhao parte da un best seller dell’autrice irlandese Maggie O’Farrell che assume il punto di vista della moglie del Bardo, Anne Hathaway, per raccontare uno degli episodi più tragici della loro vita, ovvero la morte del figlio Hamnet, a soli 11 anni. Quell’episodio da un lato è stato un trauma profondissimo per la coppia, ma è stato anche la fonte di ispirazione del capolavoro di Shakespeare, in inglese Hamlet, che porta quasi il nome del suo bambino perduto (anzi, proprio lo stesso nome, come avvisa una citazione nel film diretto da Zhao e sceneggiato insieme alla O’Farrell), e che è imperniato sul tema del lutto e della perdita di identità che ne può derivare. “Hamlet” è stato scritto infatti proprio nel periodo seguito alla morte del bambino, ed è stato portato in scena al Globe Theatre di Londra quattro anni dopo, cementando la reputazione di Shakespeare come drammaturgo.

How can one say something new, cinematically speaking, about William Shakespeare and his Hamlet? Chloé Zhao starts from a bestseller by Irish author Maggie O’Farrell that takes the point of view of the Bard's wife, Anne Hathaway, to recount one of the most tragic episodes of their life, namely the death of their son Hamnet, at only 11 years old. That episode was both a profound trauma for the couple and the source of inspiration for Shakespeare's masterpiece, in English Hamlet, which almost bears the name of their lost child (in fact, the very same name, as indicated by a quote in the film directed by Zhao and co-written with O’Farrell), and which is centered on the theme of grief and the loss of identity that can result from it. "Hamlet" was indeed written right in the period following the child's death and was staged at the Globe Theatre in London four years later, cementing Shakespeare's reputation as a playwright.
