Il Museo Gypsotheca Antonio Canova di Possagno (TV) ospita, dal 23 marzo al 21 giugno 2025, la mostra-dossier Canova e la nascita della scultura moderna, dedicata a uno dei capolavori giovanili del celebre scultore veneto: il Teseo sul Minotauro.
L’iniziativa, curata dalla prof.ssa Elena Catra, membro del Comitato scientifico dell’Ente, nasce dall’importante ingresso in collezione, grazie a un comodato gratuito, della Testa di Teseo in gesso, proveniente da una collezione privata. Si tratta di un’occasione unica per ammirare per la prima volta al pubblico questa scultura, esposta nell’Ala Lazzari accanto al primo modellino in gesso del gruppo scultoreo e alla versione finale dello stesso soggetto.
La mostra offre un percorso di approfondimento sulla genesi e sull’evoluzione di un’opera che segna il passaggio dagli ideali barocchi ai principi estetici del Neoclassicismo. Canova, infatti, abbandonò la tradizionale rappresentazione dinamica dello scontro tra Teseo e il Minotauro, scegliendo di raffigurare l’eroe in un momento di quiete e riflessione dopo la vittoria. Teseo siede sul corpo esanime del Minotauro, con la clava nella mano destra, esaltando la forza morale dell’uomo sulla brutalità della bestia.
L’esposizione rappresenta un’occasione imperdibile per comprendere il ruolo di Canova nella nascita della scultura moderna e ammirare da vicino la straordinaria maestria tecnica e la poetica neoclassica dell’Artista. L’esposizione è realizzata con il sostegno di Continuità di idee S.R.L. di Silea.
The Gypsotheca Antonio Canova Museum in Possagno (TV) hosts, from March 23 to June 21, 2025, the exhibition dossier Canova and the Birth of Modern Sculpture, dedicated to one of the young masterpieces of the famous Veneto sculptor: Theseus and the Minotaur.
The initiative, curated by Professor Elena Catra, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Institution, arises from the important acquisition of the Plaster Head of Theseus, coming from a private collection, thanks to a free loan. This is a unique opportunity to admire this sculpture, presented to the public for the first time, displayed in the Lazzari Wing next to the first plaster model of the sculptural group and the final version of the same subject.
The exhibition offers an in-depth journey on the genesis and evolution of a work that marks the transition from Baroque ideals to the aesthetic principles of Neoclassicism. Canova, in fact, abandoned the traditional dynamic representation of the struggle between Theseus and the Minotaur, choosing to depict the hero in a moment of calm and reflection after the victory. Theseus sits on the lifeless body of the Minotaur, with the club in his right hand, emphasizing the moral strength of man over the brutality of the beast.
The exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to understand Canova's role in the birth of modern sculpture and to closely admire the extraordinary technical mastery and the Neoclassical poetics of the Artist. The exhibition is made possible with the support of Continuità di idee S.R.L. from Silea.
Das Gypsotheca Antonio Canova Museum in Possagno (TV) beherbergt vom 23. März bis 21. Juni 2025 die Ausstellung-Dossier Canova und die Geburt der modernen Skulptur, die einem der Jugendmeisterwerke des berühmten venezianischen Bildhauers gewidmet ist: dem Theseus und dem Minotaurus.
Die Initiative, die von Professorin Elena Catra, Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Komitees der Einrichtung, kuratiert wird, entsteht durch den wichtigen Zugang zur Sammlung, dank eines kostenlosen Leihvertrags, des Kopfes von Theseus aus Gips, der aus einer Privatsammlung stammt. Es handelt sich um eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, diese Skulptur erstmals der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren, die in der Lazzari-Halle neben dem ersten Gipsmodell der Bildhauergruppe und der finalen Fassung des gleichen Motivs ausgestellt ist.
Die Ausstellung bietet einen vertiefenden Einblick in die Entstehung und Entwicklung eines Werkes, das den Übergang von den barocken Idealen zu den ästhetischen Prinzipien des Klassizismus markiert. Canova ließ tatsächlich die traditionelle dynamische Darstellung des Kampfes zwischen Theseus und dem Minotaurus hinter sich und wählte, den Helden in einem Moment der Ruhe und Reflexion nach dem Sieg darzustellen. Theseus sitzt auf dem leblosen Körper des Minotaurus, mit dem Knüppel in der rechten Hand, und hebt die moralische Stärke des Menschen über die Brutalität des Tieres hervor.
Die Ausstellung ist eine unverpassbare Gelegenheit, die Rolle von Canova bei der Geburt der modernen Skulptur zu verstehen und die außergewöhnliche technische Meisterschaft und die neoklassizistische Poetik des Künstlers aus nächster Nähe zu bewundern.
