Nella Venezia del 1617, all'indomani della congiura di Bedmar, la Serenissima è impegnata in una lotta senza quartiere, volta a identificare i cospiratori spagnoli e a giustiziarli uno dopo l'altro. Nel corso di questa spietata caccia all'uomo, si incrociano i destini del Caigo, lo Spettro di Venezia, l'uomo che veglia sulla città con spada e veleno, della giovane e bella profumiera Rea, della pittrice Chiara Varotari, del capo degli sbirri e degli zaffi Marco Valier, della misteriosa e spietata avventuriera che si fa chiamare L'Invelenada. Nel frattempo, anche la guerra di Gradisca giunge al suo termine e con la pace l'impegno da parte dell'Arciduca d'Austria di smantellare la flotta dei famigerati pirati Uscocchi, ma Venezia ne vuole la distruzione. Così, alle porte di Segna, covo dei corsari, si consuma una battaglia di terra e di mare all'ultimo sangue, mentre il Mangia-Cuori – l'indomito capo dei predoni – sceglie di sacrificare fino all'ultimo uomo pur di non cedere al Leone di San Marco. E mentre il sangue si mescola al sale del mare e l'odore delle calli si confonde con quello del veleno, Venezia non perdona, non dimentica e non si piega. In Venice in 1617, on the eve of the Bedmar conspiracy, the Serenissima is engaged in an all-out struggle to identify the Spanish conspirators and execute them one by one. During this ruthless manhunt, the fates of Caigo, the Specter of Venice, the man who watches over the city with sword and poison, the young and beautiful perfumer Rea, the painter Chiara Varotari, the chief of police Marco Valier, and the mysterious and ruthless adventurer who calls herself L'Invelenada intersect.
